Cam Hughes wins SSS Race 1

E-mail Print PDF

Cameron Hughes (Ord Minnett Triple Play) won the Logan Cycling Club "Siizzling Summer Series" season warm up race on Sunday 10 February 2008. The traditional South East Queensland kermese series is run at Crestmead and gives the riders a sneak preview of who has been busy over the off season and who has objectives later in the season.

This years race was a good chance to measure the Ord Minnett Triple Play UCI Continental Team against the new Team on the block, Wilson HTM (soon to be Virgin Blue).

Cam Hughes, the 2007 Grafton Inverell Classic Champion, got out of his sick bed to race in one the last races for Ord Minnett Triple Play before the Team is rebadged as "BikeKing, presented by Ord Minnett & Triple Play".

The pace was fast from the gun over the undulating Crestmead course and it wasn't until the last ten minutes that a break escaped from the attentive peloton. Cam Hughes teamed up with Chris White (Wilson HTM) and Peter Gerrone (UNI-Pensar) to put a gap in the peloton before Cam made a decisive move in the penultimate lap.

Cam won the race convincingly from Chris White with Jeremy Betts (Ord Minnett Triple Play) winning the bunch kick for third place. Cam Hughes kicks off SSS Race Two in the leaders jersey with Greg Campbell (Wilson HTM) leading the points competition.
