It’s Not Just About the Bike!
More cycles were sold last year in Australia than cars! Cycling is becoming a huge passion for Australians and more and more people are joining the ranks of those early risers, cycling round the river loop on a weekday morning, glad in lycra and amazingly chatting loudly to their neighbour.
The fact is, it’s not just about the cycling, it’s as much about the coffee at the end of the ride, the camaraderie, the fun side of meeting a bunch of people, all out for a healthy fun time, motivating each other to get fit.
So this is where BikeKing comes in. BikeKing is a membership based cycling community which aims to "fuel your cycling passion". Having started in Brisbane, BikeKing plans to grow its membership throughout Australia and provide its members with value for money kits and product, social opportunities with other members, useful information and a sense of belonging to a community who share a passion for cycling. BikeKing is not a club, everyone, especially those that intend to race, still belong to a cycling club for their license and insurance. BikeKing works with cycling clubs to encourage people in their chosen sport. BikeKing has a strong an online community, an active forum and an online shop with special product sourced especially for members.
BikeKing was launched in February 2008 and has over 100 members so far. Those members have exclusive access to the following services:
• Cycling Kit. As part of the joining fee each member gets a free BikeKing cycling kit to wear to training and events. Currently there are two choices, a dark and a light coloured kit. Each June BikeKing will bring out a new design, so that membership renewals always deliver an exciting new outfit to be seen in!
• Coaching from novice to elite. This is headed up by Cameron Hughes, a very accomplished cyclist in his own right. BikeKing caters for all aims and budgets organising group coaching sessions on a weekly basis and personalised coaching to help members reach their specific goals. Whether members cycle mainly to improve their fitness or want to race at the elite level, Cameron can provide a programme to suit their needs. BikeKing also offers corporate health packages to help employers maintain a fit and healthy workplace whilst encouraging teamwork, participation and employee relations.
• Discount on-line retail. BikeKing offers it members exclusive access to discounted cycling products ranging from complete bikes to components and cycle clothing. All products are delivered by express post and guaranteed by manufacturer's warranty. The nest thing is you have somewhere to go in Australia with changes and issues, unlike some overseas based online stores. BikeKing also offers exclusive deals on custom made Viner Bikes which are fitted using the revolutionary Sports Science Bike.
• Organised events and tours. BikeKing will regularly organise trips away, including family weekends and will be extending this in 2009 to interstate trips for events such as the very popular Road the Bay in a Day in Melbourne.
• Social events and the online forum. Being part of a community means getting together, sharing experiences and enjoying each others company. The online forum is used for organise social rides, chatting about mechanical issues etc and general exchanges between members.
• BikeKing news. Bikeking keeps its members up to date on BikeKing and other cycling news and events through regular BikeKing Newsletters, updates and special offers.
So as you can see, cycling is Not Just About the Bike, as it may be for Lance Armstrong, although after raising the millions he did for Cancer, by coming to Adelaide this year for the Tour Down Under, I think it is about much more than that for him nowadays.
